Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare if thou hast understanding. Job 38:4
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary states that one definition of perspective is “the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance.”
By comparing oneself to the vastness and majesty of creation helps to maintain a proper perspective of life. It also aids in giving a proper perspective of who God is, and who we are in relation to who He is.
The Bible declares:
“Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool: where then is the house that ye build unto Me?” (Isaiah 66:1)
“When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained; what is man, that Thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that Thou visitest him?” (Psalm 8:3-4)
How Great Thou Art
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed:
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee: How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee: How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
In contrast to how it should be, humanity tends to think more highly of itself than it ought. Humility is often replaced with arrogance and pride. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon declared, “Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?” (Daniel 4:30)
Look at creation with the correct perspective and it will help develop a spirit of humility within you. Humility is of great value as the Bible declares, “God is opposed to the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5)
