I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12
Genesis chapters 1 & 2 record the creation of all things. On six occasions God states that what He made was “good,” with His final declaration being that “it was very good.” The Bible declares “that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5) Jesus states that the “heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48) Since God is perfect, His creation was perfect when He completed it. But today we observe a creation full of decay and death. This is the result of Adam’s sin and rebellion. “Just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12)
Although the curse of death rests upon all creation, the Creator’s life giving power is greater then the power of death. “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.” (1 Corinthians 15:22) Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.” (John 11:24-25)
In the end, life will triumph over death for those who are followers of the Lord Jesus Christ: “When this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.'” (1 Corinthians 15:54)
Creation contains many examples of life rising out of death, overcoming death, or coming forth in the midst of death. New life springs forth from decaying matter; seeds are dry and lifeless before life appears; trees and bushes grow in the midst of rocky crags; roots, trunks and branches freeze solid in winter only to be resurrected in spring by the warming power of the sun. These, and other examples, are given to us by our Creator to remind us of His power over death.
