Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness. Psalm 18:1
Zion National Park was established on November 19, 1919 and consists of 229 square-miles. The National Park Service states: “Follow the paths where ancient native people and pioneers walked. Gaze up at massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink, and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Experience wilderness in a narrow slot canyon. Zion’s unique array of plants and animals will enchant you as you absorb the rich history of the past and enjoy the excitement of present day adventures.” John Muir once stated, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” A walk through Zion’s glorious landscapes will indeed refresh the soul.
Prior to 1919 many Mormons settled in this area of Utah. Their influence on the park is evidenced by the names assigned to many of the park’s most iconic natural wonders. Names such as: Virgin River, Angel’s Landing, Towers of the Virgin, Altar of Sacrifice, The Pulpit, Mountain of Mystery, The Great White Throne, The Watchman, Mount Majestic, Cathedral Mountain, The East Temple, The West Temple, Mystery Canyon, Court of the Patriarchs consisting of Abraham Peak, Isaac Peak and Jacob Peak.
The Bible declares:
“Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.” (Psalm 48:2)
