Ansel Adams

Give thanks to the Lord of lords for He made the heavens with skill.   Psalm 136:5

Ansel Adams was born in February 1902 and passed away in April 1984.   He was primarly a black & white landscape photographer whose photographs of western United States national parks, especially Yosemite National Park, positively influenced the public’s opinion of the national park system.   In addition to his skill as a photographer, he was also a skilled piano player who once stated, “The negative is the equivalent of the composer’s score, and the print the performance.”

During the 1930’s Adams was instrumental in transforming the focus of photography from that of trying to emulate the soft-focus nature of charcoal drawings and paintings.   In 1936, after an exhibition of his photographs in New York City, he dedicated himself to making “the photograph as clean, as decisive, and as honest as possible.”

Several of Ansel Adams’ more famous quotes:

“There’s nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.”

“The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it.”

“Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter.”

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs.   When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.”
